Holding doors and gates open or closed

Magnets Australia offers a variety of magnetic latch kits suitable for different gates and doors. Most kits come with all the necessary components for installation. Several kits contain magnet encased in steel, which protects it from damage during closure impacts. These kits can also serve as doorstops, preventing doors, gates, and shutters from swinging open or shut in windy conditions.

In addition to our various latch kit styles, many customers seek our guidance on creating custom solutions. Due to the many factors involved in each unique application, providing specific advice can be challenging. Below are some key considerations for developing a custom magnetic door or gate solution:

1. Air Gap

Any air gap or material between the magnet and the surface it adheres to (steel or another magnet) significantly reduces the magnet’s strength. For optimal performance, ensure close contact between the magnet and the ferrous surface.

2. Impact on Magnet

Magnets are inherently brittle. If the door makes forceful contact with the opposing surface, it may damage the magnet. Recessing the magnet into the door or frame is one solution and is where our DoorMag Range excels; alternatively, pot magnets are robust options that can withstand some impact.

3. Available Space in Frame/Door for Recessing

While recessing the magnet can give a polished look, it’s essential to consider the available depth versus the required pull force.

4. Coatings

We offer a limited range of coated magnets, such as Epoxy and Plastic, which provide some moisture and humidity resistance. However, be aware that additional coatings can negatively affect the magnet’s strength by creating a gap between the bonding surfaces.
